Expatriates : Friendships

Now, you just shush while I powder your nose just a little bit.
:: Think of covert bullying as behavior that makes someone feel like they are not welcome in a social situation and manipulating behavior as a way for the aggressor to get what they want.::
Heather, The Helpful Counselor

Some weeks ago on the NFAB Facebook page, I posted a photograph that prompted one of the users to ask, "Did you know all your friends before moving to Mexico?"  Like a bag of powdered doughnuts, Mexico keeps offering me the precious and the plentiful.  I am feeling especially grateful for the kindness of strangers - the lovely women and men who share their lives with me in Mexico.  In fact, I think you will sense that I am pretty much love gushing over them.  Coupled with my attachments in Austin, my tribe is my rebozo.  We carry and cradle one another into a lovely woven wrap, offering the finest in artisan love.

If contrast had not appeared on the scene, I would not know the extent of my tribe’s scarcity, nor how much I benefit from their loving ways.    Through my work in the States in schools, I was exposed to relational aggression on a daily basis.  There is a continuum, and though I had witnessed two young women beating the crap out of one another, what I generally observed were the more subtle forms of bullying that are meant to isolate a peer from the social circle.  Bullies are, as a rule, not subtle and yet because we are so acclimated to lower levels of violence; it takes a trained observer to pick-up on these cues.  The individual being pushed from the nest will have the most difficulty convincing others' of what they are experiencing.  The bully's friends, and they do have friends, with their utterly different experience, don't see it at all.

There is a bevy of literature on relational aggression so I won't recap what you can research for yourselves.  What I do want to capture is my gratitude for having a very deep bond with those that share their lives with me.  Their common and variegated threads create the coziest of places to simply be alive.  Here is a short list of their resiliency skills, using the convenient outline offered in The Four Agreements:
  • They Trust Themselves
The magic that underlies this skill is that no one is a threat.   When a transgression takes place, they don't freak out, perseverate nor attempt to tackle the knotted.  They are so solid in their own integrity that they do not need to defend nor reject.  Their rebozo, like the Dao, is the mesh that enfolds, allowing nothing to slip through, in or out, the most opened sections of the weave.  No one, tribe or otherwise, is ever forsaken.   Mistakes in perception, behavior and choices are allowable because there are no mistakes, only opportunities to grow.
  •  They Ask Questions
They break the mirrors of themselves.  Some of the richest lessons are offered by those who have led different lives.  There is no assumption that their own understanding is the ruler to measure others lives.  Each new person or relationship that is revisited, offers them an opportunity to give and receive. The physical nearness of the other matters not.  The expectation of a long term alliance matters not.  What most concerns them is that each moment of an interaction is fully aliveIn those moments, they correct assumptions being made about them, by themselves or the other.
  •   They Are Impeccable With Their Word
They use the word to elevate themselves and others.  The words that flow from their lips are confined to their love of their own lives and the celebration of the smallest achievements of those around them.  They are seekers of the deeper parts of themselves, still growing and always leaning towards loving in each moment.  They embrace relationship.  They are comfortable that their own standard of conduct is applicable to themselves alone.  They have no need to influence the alliances of others.
  • They Do Their Best
Every moment there is an opportunity to do it right.  The tribe is filled with fierce beauty, unafraid of their own shadows or the ones that lurk in doorways.

Even when we have been separated for a thousand years, I knew my friends in Mexico, because my friends in Texas trained me well!

In Flashes :: Meet the Collaborators :: Lovers & Artists

::I think art is a total thing. A total person giving a contribution. It is an essence a soul, and that’s what it’s about. In my inner soul art and life are inseparable.::
- Eva Hesse, artist

Do you have moments, or even days, when you just see everything unfolding?  A few weeks back, G and I were discussing that very idea, the ways we imagined ourselves in our new lives before we had lives in Mérida.  His terrace is a magical place to dream and imagine.  On a star filled night there seems that there is no better place in the world than living in Mérida.  I invite all of you to try it sometime, maybe when G has his housewarming party.  We've already decided to invite everyone we know!

As an artist it seems very natural to reach beyond what I am seeing.  Practicality delays some of those dreams, and as we know, the stability of our personal realities can shift in moments with the loss of a loved one or income.  Yet, most of us continue to push ourselves forward and project our desires onto a tangible surface.  Making dreams come true is complicated business.  It takes a lot of energy, great desire, and a bit of luck.  Change takes effort, and even when we dream of a future, we sometimes will not take the steps to turn them into a reality.  Some of us just get stuck, and need some help figuring out the steps, sort of like learning to tango, we need a partner.

So, when G and I were on the terrace, we finally turned the conversation towards love, specifically imagining love into our lives.  Our situations couldn't be more different.  He has no children, his parents are cared for by siblings, and he has few friends back home.  His job is in the US and he still owns a home there.  He travels all around the world.  When he is here he has a quick online morning meeting and is free for the rest of the day to connect with people living here.  Our community is much more suited for single men.  G will meet someone very soon.

Today I am struggling with remaining in Mérida.  I have no home in Austin waiting for me, but I do have family and friends there.  The majority of my time is spent working - nearly 70 hours a week.  I don't think it would be an issue to go back to work with my former employer, but don't I really want to listen to those horror stories again.  The men I meet here are wonderful.  The problem is they are much older, gay or married.  I've begun wearing a wedding ring because the men that seem to be attracted to me are married Mexican men.  On the rare occasion I've been asked about my pretend husband, the question most asked is, "Isn't it difficult maintaining a long distance relationship?"  Yeah, it would be.

A year ago I was struggling to stay for very different reasons.  I was totally freaked out by how severely I had cut myself off from my former life, and could not see my future beyond the drive down.  I asked friends to encourage me to stay.  I knew it would pass and that I would regain my footing, and I did.  Just as each day I see something amazingly strange and beautiful that I wish to share with someone I love, I also feel more a part of the rhythm of this city and culture.  I'm finding my groove by making time to create art, well, to be honest I am doing more talking about art than actual making.  Cooking is my current creative outlet, and planning some art workshops for next year is also filling the void of actual making.  All in good time.

Today, unlike last year, I struggle because I can see every part of my future.  It includes someone that I will love deeply.  It includes making more changes, dreaming in new ways, imagining and re-imagining so that our lives can be shared.  It is a highly inventive and a charged binary process, and a collaboration in artful partnershipThe dream has to be created with that other person.   I know that when I make art, the deepest parts of me resonate with all that is around me.  In planning art making opportunities with others, we can similarly craft our future selves into collaborators, with one another and with those deeper selves.   Art saves the day!

At The End of The Day :: Boyfriend For Life

:: I thought a great place to meet girls would be night school, you know, where they teach English as a second language. You know, because these girls would be from foreign lands and, you know, maybe still a little disoriented from the journey and I would look attractive because I speak English very goodly. But in the end it did not work out as I had hoped, I mean, basically I was told to take a hike in fourteen languages.::
- Vinnie in Must Love Dogs

A few days ago, one of my dearest friends lost her husband.  Over the last year and a half, she and her sweetheart spent as much time in the ER and ICU as they did at home.  At the juncture of each emergency, she posted an update and asked for our prayers.  We offered white light, love, comfort, care, and finally, our fondest memories of her baby.   We supported her struggle to remain grounded during these episodes, cheered her combative demands for information from his attending physicians, and laughed out loud while reading her lovely writings on the miracle of their 20 years together.

Another girlfriend married for just as long, was and remains, faced with managing the repercussions of her husbands' affair.  Trust took many variant shapes in the years following this breech.  That they have remained together is in part a testament to the strength of their friendship.  Each partner has taken drastic steps towards recommiting.   Together, they approach each day as an invitation to explore the other.  Not an easy road, but the one they have found works best for them.

As different and difficult as the two struggles are for my lovely friends, I find myself feeling a bit envious.  I am one of thousands of wonderful, talented and beautiful single Broads Abroad, with no one to greet at the end of the day.  The average Broad Abroad, regardless of country of origin,  is single, 47 y.o. and wears a size 12 dress!  Holy Smack!  I am a statistic!

Without the preoccupations of family life, our statistical situations may be a gold mine for employers and the travel industry.  This lack of family accounts for our 24-7 availability to focus on work, but really, I would rather be a gold digger than a goldmine!  Who wants to travel alone, dine alone, and sleep alone?  "Not I," said the Big Bad Broad Abroad!

There is no Boyfriend For Life to smoother with kisses, to read the Sunday paper with, and linger under unwashed sheets.  There is a Wii on the coffee table, but no We when chopping vegetables, dancing like Gene Kelly, or misbehaving like a globe trotting American.  I face, as all the other single bad ass Broads Abroad, the hard times alone, in sickness and in health.

Today, and maybe even tomorrow, I am sad for my girlfriends, and I am sad for myself.  There is something fundamentally wrong about coming home at the end of the day with no one to ask how the day went.  Perhaps I expect too many of the gaps that take a lifetime to fill to already be flushed out.  As a single working woman living in Mexico, with few friends nearby, I sometimes feel my life is comparable to that of a traveling salesman.  Instead of drifting from hotel room to hotel room, I find myself drifting between the rooms of my modest home.  What am I hoping to find?  Certainly not a hoard of cats!

My friends' hearts broke wide open 20 years ago.  They allowed love to walk in and they never let go.  I've been married.  It wasn't easy.  I suspect that as we age, we are indeed less flexible in all ways, and yet, I desire companionship.  I don't want the living things I miss the most to be my dead animals, my parents, or my friends.  I want the person I miss the most to be my best friend, and the dirty toilets, wrinkled sheets, and stepped upon feet we create together.

No, I'm Not Through With You! :: Mother-f%uking LOVE!

::You can try to avoid love all you want. You can decide you’re not ready to date after an OkCupid meet-up gone horribly meh. You can hole yourself up in your house, working like a fiend, watching reruns of Frasier, reading Fifty Shades of Grey and Rumi, eating buttered noodles and asparagus, and love will come knocking on your mother-f%@king door anyway. Literally.::
                                                        - Melanie Batesman, Femme Tales

Let's set the mood for this post with a little shag-o-rama!

MARRIED/PARTNERED Broads Abroad, let-er-rip!  Sing that Loud Sister song of love, and show the SINGLE Broads Abroad that the Hokey Pokey is still what it's all about!

Okay, SEXY SINGLE Broads Abroad!  I've been holding back.  NO MORE!  It is ALL about the LOVE!  Connection is why there are other humans on the planet.  Some of you are so nervous you just tightened your chastity belt.  Some of you really need a new lock on that thing because you aren't ever going to find that key.  Others of you just don't know what the hell I am even talking about with all this love stuff.  So, let me spell it out for you.

No matter where you are
No matter how old you are
No matter how much time you believe was wasted with former partners
No matter how many times you ignored your instincts out of loneliness and shagged the village idiot at hand
No matter how many times you have heard, "stop looking. love will find you."

LOVE IS COMING!

A few months ago, I woke up and knew with perfect certainty that love was coming.  I'm not talking about that moment when you start shaving your legs again.  I'm not talking about that moment when you decide to starve yourself so you get skinny, which is not HOT by the way, as grown-up women should have some muffins to grab.  I'm not talking about the night you followed the directions in The Secret to manifest your lover.  (Just FYI:  I'd be real careful on that one.  You might take for granted that your love will be smart, forget to ask for a good intellect, and come home with someone dumber than a Jim Carey character.)  I'm not talking about that moment when you start to see people that make you want to shout, "Take your pants off Dawlin!"  HAHAHAHA!

I'm talking about a moment so pregnant with life, so rich in feeling, and so perfectly calm, you can have no doubt the intention is well being.  You won't miss that special someone. The special someone won't miss you either, so don't go hiking up your petticoat like it was being used as flag semiphor at a car race.  No doubt in my mind, there will be no need for dramatics or girl magic.

Have you ever had that feeling when you meet "the" someone that the two of you are in a slow motion movie still, with a blur of action happening all around you?  How about that urge to fly off the edge of a precipice expecting to be unharmed?  Or that moment when you find yourself thinking about "the" someone, and mutter out loud, "Unbelievable."  I hate to break it to you, but that isn't how it will happen.  Just in case you didn't have a MaMere as smart as mine, just let me tell you Dawlin, that is called Gonad Love, not to be confused with Muskrat Love (WOW, was that a bad song or what!)

What is going to happen to you is totally believable.  You can't mess it up.  No matter what comes out of your pretty little mouth or your precious bottom, (just keepin' it real), you will be loved for exactly who you are, and exactly in the way you need to be loved.  Forget the Five Lost Love Languages!  Forget Eat, Pray, Love You Long Time!  Forget 50 Shades of Shallow!

No fear my lovely Broads Abroad.  Everything is in perfect alignment.  Now, just go over to that someone, look that sucker straight in the eye, and in your sweetest Southern drawl ask, "Do you want to wrestle?"

Smokin' Hot Homegrown Boyfriend For Life Latin Mover :: How Search Engines Work

:: When he looks back at me, his eyes travel around my face the way fingers dart through the bottom of a drawer, searching for batteries in a blackout.::
- Holly Schindler, Playing Hurt

Should you want the full flavor of this post, please assume the identity of two distinct characters.  I am channeling Forrest Gump and Fifty Cent.  Any postings I make in the next few days should NOT be trusted.
I quit smoking.
My plan was to quit on the one year anniversary of my move abroad.  As there have been previous attempts at various stages of my life, I know how it rolls.  The day would arrive and I would not be moved to quit.  When I woke up the other morning, I had received a postcard from Baby Jesus that read, 'QUIT', so I did.  In this state of chemical withdrawal, I seem to deeply dislike people from cold ass places like Wisconsin,  am passionately jealous of those in jihad training, and could kick my own backdoor for not having enough chocolate stashed in Casa de la Colmena Azul!

Believe this - I AM temporarily a crazy person!

1: 00 a.m.
I jump out of bed, head to the bathroom, mostly silent, but as I seem to have developed Tourette Syndrome, a demonic out-loud voice arises, scripting a run-on monologue.  It goes something like this:

Boyfriend For Life!, I am way over transforming myself into your smokin' hot girlfriend just to end up sleeping with king size pillows!   Get your ass down here!  I need you here right now!  And that's all I have to say about that.  I just looked at a cigarette butt, picked it up, rolled it between my forefinger and thumb, and asked myself which was more important, lighting that foul smelling two day old butt, or smelling your peppermint breath.  I'm sick!  I'm an addict!  I'm crying!  I want to come homeNow, you come on and fetch me!

3:32 a.m.
Back to bed.

4:30 a.m.:: 2nd cup of coffee
Jimmy legs!  Jimmy arms!  Jimmy strands of hair!.  Every part of me is jumping.  If I were a squirrel, I would have already munched down on an electrical line!  Let's make some waffles!

5:30 a.m.:: 4th cup of coffee
What the hell woke me up at 1 a.m.? Oh, it was the damn Russians.  They are following me.  I swear, Russians are watching every move I make.  Why me?  I am not interesting in any way, especially at this point in my non-smoking career.  Why, I look ridiculous, which is not a synonym for marvelous.  My fist are  wrapped so tight around my tiny 2 lb hand weights, you'd think I was prepared to meet Sugar Ray.  My arms are moving enough water to be certified a national treasure.  From now on, please just refer to me as The Broad known as Cascada.

6:45 a.m.
I keep forgetting to tell you what this post is about!
